Knights win district wrestling by half point

Brown pins; Jules finishes

NEPTUNE BEACH - With a thunderous pin in the second period by Evan Brown and a tough 5-1 win by Chris Jules, the Oakleaf High boys wrestling team teetered to a dramatic district 1-3A championship win Monday afternoon at Fletcher High.

"We are a much stronger IBT team than a duals team," said Oakleaf wrestling coach Rory Roderick. "Everybody showed up today. Chris Jules was an impact player on football and proved that today."

In the final matches of the meet with Tocoi Creek on top with 203.0 points and Oakleaf and Creekside battling in the 190-plus points range, the Knights started chipping away at the Tocoi Creek lead led by a pin from Evan Brown in the 215-pound consolation final. Brown was down 9-1 to Tocoi Creek's Michael Vaisman before Brown caught Vaisman on a turn and flipped him to his back for a thunderous pin and six points for Oakleaf.

"I just go hard to the whistle and coach said we needed a break," Brown said. "He made a move on me and I countered, then attacked. Then I covered him and it was over."

Jules, at 285, was hovering over the first-place mat waiting for his shot at Tocoi Creek's Braylon Lawrence with Roderick offering a moment of quiet advice.

"I just told him we needed him," Roderick said. "All he had to do was win, didn't have to pin and I told him to stay forward on him and get the points for stalling."

Jules and Lawrence battled in the center of the ring looking for openings with, ironically, Jules getting a stalling warning.

"I just kept telling him to go forward," Roderick said.

Jules eventually won with a stall and escape point in the second period, then a takedown in the third to end the match. Oakleaf finished with 203.5 points to Tocoi Creek's 200 and Creekside third at 185.5.

For Oakleaf, Jules was honored with his 100th career win prior to the finals match and teammate Sebastian Bonachea got his 100th win in his final: an 18-1 tech fall over Tocoi Creek's Landon Caviness.
