KidsKonnectUkraine builds community action, global partnerships

WESTERN UKRAINE — Taylor Thigpen, a 20-year-old Green Cove Springs native and global leader based in Washington, D.C., traveled independently to western Ukraine recently ignoring Air-raid sirens to meet with nearly 500 young people, educators, civic leaders and local Ukraine governments working to sustain education, entrepreneurship, leadership and youth empowerment amid ongoing war.

Thigpen serves as Deputy Director of KidsKonnectUkraine (KKU), a global initiative that connects 3,000 Ukrainian and American youth through dialogue, community action and collaborative projects. He is also the CEO and Founder of Local Hands Global Heart Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young people and supporting community-driven development initiatives around the world.

During the visit, Thigpen traveled across western Ukraine — including the Lviv, Kalush and Ivano-Frankivsk regions — meeting with nearly 500 Ukrainian students and young leaders through school visits, youth dialogues and community gatherings. The trip focused on listening to young people’s experiences during the war and strengthening international partnerships that amplify youth voices globally.

“Despite the realities of war, what I witnessed in Ukraine was resilience, determination and an extraordinary commitment to education and community,” Thigpen said. “Young people here are not just enduring difficult circumstances; they are daily shaping their country’s future.”

Throughout the visit, Thigpen met with local government representatives, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, educators and youth organizations to discuss ways to expand international youth engagement and support young Ukrainians, especially those near front lines.

Conversations centered on what young people need now, global dialogue and opportunities for Ukrainian youth to connect with peers around the world. All to ensure young people have the resources to rebuild their future, even while the war surpasses its fourth anniversary.

The visit builds on the ongoing work of KidsKonnectUkraine, which creates platforms for cross-cultural exchange between Ukrainian and American youth. Through digital storytelling, dialogue sessions and leadership programs, the initiative aims to foster empathy, global understanding and long-term collaboration.

When meeting the Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ruslan Martsinkiv, Thigpen was asked "aren't you scared?” Even after waking up at 4:30 a.m. to an Air-raid alert, Thigpen replied, “not really, this is why I do what I do” [pointing at the young people circling around him].

Thigpen presented to Venture Camp Ukraine youth at the Ukrainian Catholic University. As founder of Local Hands Global Heart, Thigpen has supported youth-focused initiatives across five continents, working with community partners to advance education, leadership development and social entrepreneurship. Through KidsKonnectUkraine, the entire team has impacted 3,000 youth in high-level programming,

“This trip reinforced that global solidarity with Ukrainians matters, showing up means the world to those whose world is upside down,” Thigpen said. “When young people connect across borders, they build understanding, resilience and a shared commitment to peace and opportunity.”

The visit also laid groundwork and amplification for KidsKonnectUkraine’s June initiative, Project Oxygen, bringing 40 teens from around the world to Italy to engage in connection, peacebuilding and develop community action. Culminating in an audience with youth voices from crisis areas at Vatican City
