Keystone Heights speech and debate team continues contests

Posted

The Keystone Heights JR/SR High Speech and Debate Team wrapped up its third regular season and continues preparing for state tournament and national qualifiers.

At such tournaments, students compete in a variety of events. Their performances throughout the season determine their eligibility for national competitions.

KHHS competes in three major Speech and Debate leagues:

  • The National Forensic Catholic League, which will host its National Competition this May in Chicago. Three students qualified in February: Erabella Conant in Extemporaneous Speaking; Mikalya Turner and Benjamin Mann in Duo Interpretation
  • The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA), celebrating its 100th anniversary with a national competition this June in Des Moines, Iowa. The qualifier will be held at the end of March.
  • The Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI), which will hold its state tournament in April.

Coach Shannon Southam, a former speech and debate competitor from Ohio, has been instrumental in growing the KHHS program. With nearly 20 years of experience as a judge and coach, she is passionate about expanding Speech and Debate opportunities throughout Clay County.

“I believe in running a free program for students,” said Southam. “Many students cannot afford the costs associated with travel, tournament fees, or hiring a coach.”
