KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - Untimely penalties and some glimpses of success, led by a breakaway run from Jagger Lancaster in the final moments, were what Keystone Heights High football coach Steve Reynolds came away with from his double scrimmage night against West Nassau and Lafayette County-Mayo high schools in a multi-team, half game scrimmage format at Keystone Heights High School.
Keystone Heights High coach Steve Reynolds has to once again piece together enough healthy players to take on what is always a tough schedule.
"We had our younger guys in there at the end (against Mayo) and we were trying some guys in some spots to see what they could do," said Reynolds, who had scores of 14-0 against West Nassau and 14-0 against Mayo in his two games. "Jagger did a great job of bouncing outside and then just running as hard as he could."
For Lancaster, a state weightlifter as well for the Indians, saw the pileup in front of him, made a cut, then saw green grass.
"I just ran to the grass and hoped noone was behind me," said Lancaster. "I'm pretty fast, but they had a guy catch me."
For the Indians, who finished with a 2-8 record last year and a host of transfers out of key players, the start of the summer looks to be a rebuild, weightlift and create some team bond, said Reynolds.
"We only had a week or two to get any type of offense game plan, so we went with just straight ahead stuff to get a look at our offensive line plan," said Reynolds, with notable transfers on the offensive line leaving very big gaps. "We'll focus on getting guys bigger, stronger then put in technique game plans. A game like this lets everyone know where the work has got to go."
West Nassau opened with a strong run game that got a 10 play scoring drive with defensive stops from Colton Hollingsworth, Zane Leger and freshman Josiah Bardler along the way.
Keystone Heights had Ryder Trull at quarterback for the spring games against West Nassau and Mayo, but still have Baylor Ford on the roster, last year's quarterback, now at wide receiver with his track speed.

"Colton and Zane should be our top defenders at linebackers with Trase Wooden, Luke Bacorn and Pete Bostic on the line," said Reynolds.
Starting quarterback Ryder Trull got tagged with an interception on the Indians opening drive after two bad center snaps had the Indians at third an 21.
West Nassau kept pounding the interior of the Indians defense with tackles from Wooden, Cole Crabtree, Bostic and Kyle Perkins slowing the Warriors attack into the second quarter.
Keystone Heights almost turned the tables with a scramble for a fumble, but West Nassau recovered and got scoring pass on the next play to go up 6-0. West Nassau scored their second touchdown on a seven yard pass play to 14-0.
Crabtree added some spark with a 22 yard run to end the half.
Against Mayo in the final stanza of the night, starting quarterback Ryder Trull got tagged with a quick pick six interception from the Indians 25 to set the score at 6-0 with less than two minutes off the clock.
On the Indians second series, penalty flags for false starts put the Indians back to a fourth and 25 situation that got a punt.
"When you come out like that, interception and fourth a 20 whatever, it tests the resolve of the team," said Reynolds. "We kept playing hard which was a good sign."
Keystone Heights will look to strongman Peter Bostic to rebuild an offensive line depleted slightly by transfer off the team.
The punt on fourth down only added to Reynolds' woes, with West Nassau cashing in with a 35 yard pass play top ut the score at 14-0.
Trull regrouped and put up two pass plays to wide out Sammy Wacha to get Keystone to midfield quickly, but misfired to Jamari Turner to force a Ryder Thomas punt.
Highlights for the younger Keystone Heights players included Lancaster's run plus a near interception from sophomore Donald Hill and a tough pass breakup from sophomore Caleb Alvers on a post pattern to force a punt just a play before Lancaster's breakaway.
Lancaster would fumble the ball away on his next carry, but Keystone Heights defensive back Coy Campbell went high to intercept a Mayo pass attempt to end game. Mayo would strike with a touchdown run, but a flag ended the game at 14-0.
