The discovery of human remains found in the St. Johns River off Highway 17 on May 7 prompted a Clay County Sheriff’s Office probe.
A homeowner notified 911 at approximately 5:07 p.m. after finding skeletal remains at their Fleming Island home’s bulkhead near the river, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation began with CCSO Patrol units, dive team and detectives at the highway’s 3200 block near Doctors Lake Bridge.
The sheriff’s office posted in a statement: “Our team worked diligently throughout the evening looking for evidence and identifying factors and will be out in the area again on the morning of May 8. The remains will be sent to the medical examiner’s office to assist with our investigation and help determine a cause of death.”
