George Quicksall Bishop, Jr., 86, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, in Chicago. George was born in Thomasville, Georgia, on May 6, 1938, to the late George Q. Bishop, Sr., and Annie (Wade) Bishop. George graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, in Jacksonville, in 1956. He attended Jacksonville University and was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army.
George is survived by his son, Michael L. Bishop (Shane Thomas), of Atlanta; by his daughter, Melodie M. Bishop (Brian Morris), of Chicago; and by his adored grandchildren, Thomas and Mariella. George was predeceased by his parents, his sister Matilda O’Neal, his brother James W. Bishop, and his former wife, Marjorie Whitehead Fachko. He is survived by his devoted and beloved sisters Ann Cowdrey, Mary Cassady and Joan Killebrew. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
George was a gentle and quiet man, who exemplified kindness and respect to his family, friends and acquaintances. He was very proud of his family’s long Georgia history and, though he spent much of his childhood in Florida and South Carolina and most of his adulthood again in Florida, he never lost the soft Georgia accent and small-town values of his youth. He enjoyed reading (mostly history) and travel & exploring (near and far; counties and countries), and gave his children a love of these things, as well. George was a passionate and talented golfer, a sport he embraced as a young teen and enjoyed throughout his life and well into his 80s. He was particularly proud of the collection of over 500 scorecards he amassed from various clubs and courses he played during his many happy golfing adventures. We believe he is probably playing golf on a beautiful course in Heaven at this very moment --- with a new set of clubs and a restored youthful swing.
George’s family will remember and celebrate his life in a private gathering.
