GREEN COVE SPRINGS- The Board of County Commissioners announced that the Florida Department of Transportation will be contributing more than $1 million toward the County Road 220 project on Tuesday.

The additional funds will go towards the projects CEI services.

Phase 1 consists of widening to four lanes Hollars Place to west of Henley Road, ending at Chief Ridaught Trail, as well as other improvements at the intersection of County Road 220 and Henley Road.

While phase 2, set to begin on Jan. 20, will widen to four lanes from east of Chief Ridaught Trail to Knight Boxx Road, build a new four-lane bridge over Little Black Creek and provide signal updates at Knight Boxx Road and Blanding Boulevard.

Both jobs are expected to take more than a year.

District 4 Commissioner and chair Betsy Condon noted that the money is greatly appreciated by the board, and will help in lessening the burden on the county budget.

In other business:

The board presented a proclamation to professional women's soccer player and Fleming Island native Carson Pickett for her inspiration to young athletes across the nation.

Pickett attended St. Johns Country Day School, where she led the soccer team to three state championships.

Pickett also attended Florida State University where, as a starting defender, she helped lead her team to their first ever NCAA Division 1 National Championship in 2014 and was drafted fourth overall in the first round by the Seattle Reign FC in 2016.

She has also earned many accolades including the National Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year and the First Coast Player of the Year in 2012.

Pickett currently plays for the Orlando Pride.
