FLEMING ISLAND - With a handful of net serves that trickled over the for points, the Santa Fe High Raiders volleyball team took a 3-1 win against Fleming Island to halt the Golden Eagles' five-game season-opening winning streak.
"Those are normal mistakes, but they got on a roll and got points from them," said Fleming Island coach Amy Yoder, now 5-1. "We'll see them later in the season at their place. They simply outplayed us tonight."
Santa Fe, 8-2 now and a perennial Class 4A playoff contender and back-to-back state champion three years ago, controlled the defensive floor on Tuesday, Sept. 2, against the mighty swings of Lauren Brosky and Lillie Eason.
Fleming Island (6-1) hosted Orange Park on Tuesday, Sept. 9, then traveled to 4A power Bishop Kenny (7-2, with a loss to 5A runner-up La Cueva High of New Mexico and to Trinity Christian Academy) on Thursday, Sept. 11.
Trinity Christian has been the surprise giant killer thus far this season with wins against Middleburg, St. Johns Country Day School, Oakleaf and Bishop Kenny, and lone losses to Providence and Merritt Island.
Around the county, Middleburg came home after a tough 3-3 weekend at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Gainesville, to take a 3-0 win against county rival Clay High, then take out Class 5A powerhouse Tallahassee Leon, 3-0, in the first of three Class 5A gauntlet games, which included No. 1 Chiles on Monday, Sept. 8, and a road trip to No. 14 Ponte Vedra a day later.
Middleburg, 6-4, is ranked 13th. Broncos senior Camden Rahn is a top scorer in Class 5A with 109 kills so far.
At St. Johns Country Day School, first-year coach Amy Walker, a past playoff-contending coach for Orange Park and Fleming Island, used her savvy to lead a tough 3-1 win for the Lady Spartans against University Christian, now 4-2. St. Johns improved to 3-1 with its only losses to Trinity Christian Academy and Providence last week.
Ridgeview answered a 3-0 loss to Ponte Vedra last week with two wins by beating Bartram Trail and Orange Park last Thursday, Sept. 4.
"I think we are turning it around here," said Ridgeview coach Sarah Anderson, after the 3-0 win over the Raiders. "We had a lot of new faces after a big graduating class, and they are starting to come together to play as a team. We may be surprising some people."
Senior Kara Reed led the Panthers at the net with 10 kills, while also dishing three aces on serves.
Sophomore Kai Longmire had three blocks and six scores for Orange Park.
Keystone Heights, 5-3, has a two-game win streak going with wins against Baker County and Palatka, before going into road games against Bradford and Interlachen this week. The Indians will then travel to a tournament at JJVA in Jacksonville.
Keystone Heights junior hitter Mia Rivera is second in 3A with her 119 kills and 14th in all of Florida, just five behind the state leader from Clearwater Calvary Christian.
Oakleaf, 2-3, took a game from Trinity Christian but eventually lost 3-1 to Clay on Tuesday, Sept. 2, then at the River City Classic at JJVA. A home match with Middleburg is set for Sept. 16.
Orange Park, 0-6, heads to Fleming Island, 6-1, on Tuesday, September 9, with tournament play to follow.
