Eagles girls track steals title

ORANGE PARK - The girls district 3-3A track and field title came down to a 60 second run by Fleming Island High junior distance ace Brooke Reynolds as the Golden Eagles and the Ridgeview High Lady Panthers toed the start line for the 4 x 400 relay with just a one-point gap between the two schools; 129-130, for Fleming Island.

"It just came down to doing what the team needed to win the title," said Reynolds, who had earlier won the 1600 and finished second in the 800 just about 20 minutes before the final event. "I just took off and ran as hard as my legs would last."
Reynolds' final lap around the Don Hall Track at Orange Park High lasted just 60 seconds, but gave Fleming Island's girls a 140-134 win over Ridgeview while the boys team, with as strong a display of distance running and a double sprint title from football ace Sebastian Cruz, won handily, 195-121, over Gainesville High.
Fleming Island's boys won the 4 x 800 by 23 seconds, had Andrew Boyer win the 1600 by 17 seconds in 4:38.20, got second in the 400; Lennox Ivey in a quick 49.89, and got a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 3200; Jacob Campbell in 9:55.55 for the win to pile on the points.
Cruz took a 10.93 second win in the 100 and a 22.04 win in the 200 for Fleming Island.
Other district champions included Ridgeview's Braidyn Matz in the 800 and Kalani Smith in the girls high jump, Middleburg's Madison Underwood in the girls discus, Orange Park's Nethan Verger in the long jump and Fleming Island's Mikayla Shavers in the girls triple jump.
District champions advanced automatically to the regions to be held Friday, May 2 at Pine Forest High in Pensacola for region 1-3A, Seminole High for 1-4A (OHS) and Satellite High for region 2-1A (SJCDS) on Saturday, May 3.
Keystone Heights High's district 4-1A championships will be at Santa Fe High on Friday, April 25.
In baseball regions, Clay and St. Johns Country Day School both advanced to their region semifinals with second wins in their best of three series against Covenant School of Jacksonville for the Spartans; 10-0 on Monday and 15-0 on Tuesday, with Clay winning 3-2 on Monday and 9-1 over Baker County on Tuesday. St. Johns waits for the result of game three of the series between St. Johns Paul II and North Florida Christian. Keystone Heights lost 8-3 and 9-0 to Bishop Snyder to end their season.
In tennis, Fleming Island's single No. 1 Zack Hyatt plus his No. 1 Doubles partner Kesl Cumpstone advanced to the Class 3A championship tournament numerous sites in Orlando. Fleming Island's boys team lost to Nease with Ridgeview losing to Ponte Vedra to end their seasons.
In Class 1A, St. Johns Country Day School's boys team lost to PK Yonge in their region opener.
In girls tennis, Ridgeview was scheduled to play Nease, Fleming Island was to play Ponte Vedra and Oakleaf was to play Spruce Creek in region round one matches.
