Dreadnaughts 11s "Fridge" Deger scores twice in playoff win

PALATKA - Fleming Island Dreadnaughts coach Mike Kenny had one guy circled on the roster of the Leesburg Jackets Pop Warner team that his Dreadnaughts were to face last Saturday in the Southeast Region Pop Warner Division I playoff opener in Palatka.

"They got one kid, the quarterback (Kameron Stokes), that is their guy," Kenny said. "He scored all 33 points in their 33-0-win last week, and our defense is going to have to have a great day to keep him bottled up."

Prophetic as his words were, it was the defense for Kenny that delivered with the front four on the defensive line. Everett Segreto, Tristan Deger, Semaj McIntosh and Jackson Lerch dominated the line of scrimmage and kept Leesburg and Stills under wraps until a pair of long touchdown passes late in the game fueled a 34-20-win for the Dreadnaughts.

Leesburg came in with an 8-1 season record.

Also, a shift in the Dreadnaughts attack on the line of scrimmage was the William "Fridge" Perry (Chicago Bears Super Bowl defensive tackle) two touchdowns by Deger into the meat of the Leesburg defense.  A second defensive lineman, Jackson Lerche, also scored on a touchdown plunge.

Note: Perry was famous as a huge 335-pound defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, 1985 Super Bowl champions, who was used to score a touchdown as a rookie.

Quarterback Maury Avellino directed the Dreadnaughts attack in a run strong strategy of Kenny's that was two-fold in purpose.

"We want to keep our offense on the field as long as possible to keep their guy on defense at safety," said Kenny, who had just two passes on the day, both extra point catches after touchdowns. "We get him tired chasing our guys and he's less effective on offense."

In the first quarter, with running back Laneal Hopkins leading the charge on the ground, it was the burly Deger barreling in from five yards out to put Fleming Island on the scoreboard.

Deger was rumbling a second time to a 13-0 score with 6:03 left in the second quarter as Fleming Island just took the 5–8-yard runs per carry the length of the field while chewing up the game clock.

Fleming Island scored one more before halftime with Hopkins diving into the end zone off a 12-yard run to put the score at 20-0.

Leesburg would get Stokes loose on a 50-yard run to put the half at 20-7.
In the third, Leesburg started throwing the ball vertical with some success, some drops, with the Jackets getting two scores to close the gap. With first down at the Leesburg 15 after a Segreto sack, fullback Robert Phinizy started carrying the ball with two runs landing at the Leesburg four.

With 1:02 left in the third, Hopkins scored his second touchdown for a 27-7 lead with 27 seconds left in the third.

Into the fourth, Leesburg again got deep but had drops from their pass catchers until Leesburg got to the Dreadnaughts 28-yard line to start the quarter.
Stokes hit his receiver for a touchdown pass to get the game to 27-14 with 8:53 to go.

Late in the fourth quarter, Kenny started running full house sweeps led by Bode Cottrell and Phinizy taking chunks of yardage before Hopkins landed on the Leesburg 14-yard line with 4:54 to go.

Deger pushed his way in for his third score to put the score at 34-14 with a surprise pass on the PAT to Kaius Dixon. Leesburg got to the Dreadnaught five with a nifty across-the-field run before scoring to end at 34-20. Jackson Trude intercepted the PAT pass attempt in the end zone.
