The season starts with the Daytona 500, and its date is unique. It’s the Sunday before the third Monday in February. While 41 people have died at the speedway – 24 drivers, 12 motorcyclists, three karting drivers, one powerboat racer on Lake Lloyd and a track worker who was struck by a race car during a caution period while he was picking up debris – only one, Dale Earnhardt, died during the Daytona 500. Richard Petty has the record for winning 10 races at Daytona, including seven Daytona 500s. Still, Earnhardt has the record for leading the most laps – 1,286 – although he has only three wins at the 2.5-mile speedway with only one Daytona 500 victory in 1998. Petty led eight fewer laps – 1,278 laps. Trevor Bayne and Mario Andretti are Daytona 500 winners, and it remains the only NASCAR Cup wins in their careers. Finally, Dave Marcis has the most Daytona 500 starts with 33, including a streak of 32 in a row.
