BARTRAM TRAIL -Just three minutes into the second half, Fleming Island freshman Angel Coyle took heed to her coach and fired a 25-foot laser shot to the upper left corner to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 in a huge near upset of three-time Class 7A champion Bartram Trail in the final regular season game of 2025 for both teams.
Bartram Trail would eventually tie the game that finished at 2-2.
"The girls played out of their minds tonight against one of the best teams in the nation as well as in Florida," said Fleming Island girls soccer coach Taylor Berry, who has not avoided the heavy confrontation of putting her team against the top teams in the state. "We were a young team coming into the season, but also a very talented bunch of young players. I think tonight gave them the confidence that they can play against anyone on our schedule."
In the first half, lead scorer Rylie Gardner struck first for the Golden Eagles who held their 1-0 lead throughout the first half until Bartram Trail scored with just two minutes to the break.
"If you were to say 1-1 at the half, I'd be thrilled," Berry said. "We knew they were going to coming after us in the second half and I'm proud of the fact that we changed to a 4-4-1 formation late in the game to offset their forwards pressing us and got four shots on goal in the final five minutes; one a shot by Haley Sakowski that just skimmed the cross bar that could have won the game."
Fleming Island ends 2025 with a 5-4-2 record while Bartram Trail finishes at 10-1-3. Bartram Trail's lone loss was a 2-1 loss to 5A number one Ponte Vedra with one of their three ties to St. Johns Country Day School, 3-3 in early November. The Spartans are number one ranked in Class 1A at 9-2-3 and finished 2025 with a 0-0 tie with Class 4A champion Bishop Moore.
In other games last week, Oakleaf beat West Nassau 3-2 with goals from Leila Doyle, Janessa Sanchez and Kendyl Banks. The Knights are 5-4-1.
At Middleburg, forward Natalia Versage scored late to secure a 3-1-win for the Clay High Blue Devils who had goals from Charlotte Andrus and Tatum Waugh with Maysie Bader scoring for the Broncos. Clay is 6-1-2, while Middleburg is 5-8-1.
In boys soccer, Fleming Island got a first half penalty kick from Carson Doyle for a 3-0-lead en route to a 6-0-win over Orange Park.
