KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – A group of 13 Clay Electric Co-Op employees left the Keystone Heights office at 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, for a 397-mile drive to the North Georgia mountains ahead of last week’s massive winter and ice storm.
The volunteers included six linemen and five apprentices, and a mechanic and foreman. They took three 55-foot bucket trucks, three service trucks, two pick-ups and a mechanic truck to work with Amicalola EMC.
Clay and Amicalola have a cooperation agreement. They arrived to stage with other electric providers to be ready to restore power as soon as conditions permitted.
Based in Jasper, Georgia, Amicalola provides service to residents in 10 Georgia counties, primarily 70 miles northeast of Atlanta.
They arrived the day before the storm blanketed the area with a layer of ice that covered trees and power lines, creating 87,000 outages.
The employees returned home on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
