Clay County’s only Special Olympics equestrian team excels at 2026 Area and State Games

MIDDLEBURG— The Adaptive Riding Program at J & S Performance Horses proudly represented Clay County and the Northeast Region at the 2026 Special Olympics Equestrian Area and State Games, delivering an impressive season marked by dedication, teamwork and outstanding achievement.

As the only Special Olympics equestrian team in Clay County, the program provides year-round adaptive horsemanship and riding opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities, serving both local participants and those from surrounding counties.

The 2026 team included three coaches—Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Samantha—eight athletes, and more than ten volunteers, all working together to support the program’s mission of accessibility, inclusion and growth through equestrian sport.

At the Special Olympics Area Games, hosted in February at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, all eight athletes—Beckett, Brian, Brett, Mia, Nathaniel, Ruby, Sebastian and Talia—achieved remarkable success across multiple disciplines. The team earned six gold medals, three silver medals, four bronze medals and three fourth place finishes.

Following their strong performance, three athletes—Talia, Nathaniel and Sebastian—advanced to the Special Olympics State Games, held at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. There, they continued to excel on a larger stage, representing Florida. Competing in six classes over two days, the athletes earned five gold medals and a silver medal.

Beyond the medals, program leaders emphasize that the true success lies in the athletes’ growth, confidence and connection with their horses.

“The dedication from our athletes, the support from our volunteers, and the heart of our horses is what makes this program so special,” said program leadership. “These moments go far beyond competition—they represent hard work, trust and life-changing experiences.”

The Adaptive Riding Program remains committed to expanding opportunities for individuals with diverse abilities, using horsemanship as a tool for physical, emotional and personal development.

“For Clay County, this team is more than a program—it’s a place where determination meets opportunity, and where every ride is another step forward.”
