The two top seeds in district 3-5A, No. 1 Fleming Island and No. 2 Clay, settled the score on Tuesday, Jan. 27 with the district championship on the line at Fleming Island High. Clay won a 2-1 game over Columbia to advance while Fleming Island defeated Middleburg 6-1. Clay got two first half goals against Columbia from senior Marvin Martinez—one after a spectacular head ball off a corner kick from Gavin Tenga, the second after a scramble in front of the Columbia goal just three minutes later. Fleming Island got goals against Middleburg from Nathan Mehler, Tyson Janda, Jackson Morgan, Kaiden Garcia and Joshua Gosselin in their balanced offensive attack.
Fleming Island defeated Clay 6-0 in last year's district final with the Golden Eagles advancing to the region semifinals before losing a 2-1 game to eventual 5A champion Arnold High.
