On Friday, October 30, 2026, God called His faithful servant, Brother Charlie Hunt, home.
Charlie was born in 1941 at his family’s home in Majestic, Kentucky, to Harry and Julia Hunt. He was raised in a large family in the Majestic Collieries Company Coal Camp in Pikeville, Kentucky. Charlie often recalled that they didn’t have many luxuries or excess, but what they did have was a home filled with love.
He weighed just three pounds at birth, and his mother laid him in a small shoebox. From the very beginning, Brother Charlie showed himself to be someone who could overcome obstacles and excel in everything he did. His dad taught him how to work hard, and his mom showed him how to love. He was the perfect combination of both.
In 1962, he married the love of his life, Mary. Together, they enjoyed 64 wonderful years of marriage and raised four children. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. Determined to provide the best life he could for his family, Charlie moved them to Florida, where he went to work for Johns-Manville. Hard work and dedication earned him multiple promotions.
On January 1, 1974, Charlie’s life changed forever when his sister Pearl and her husband Dennis Doan came to the Hunt family home to talk to Charlie about salvation. Charlie gave his heart to Jesus that day. For the rest of his life, he faithfully served God, his family, and his church.
Charlie became a deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church and also served as a Gideon. He had a passion for sharing the bible and God called Charlie to be a Pastor. He became the Associate Pastor under his mentor, Rev. Jack Hall, at Decoy Baptist Church.
Charlie was eventually called to be the Pastor of Black Pond Baptist Church. Middleburg and Clay County had their own pastor. He left his job and moved his family into the pastorium on the church grounds. He devoted his life to being God’s hands and feet.
He spent his days studying the Bible, visiting people in hospitals and in their homes, and preaching every chance he got. Charlie preached hundreds of funerals and officiated countless weddings, never asking for anything in return. He had a famous saying: “I’ll be there as long as I can preach Jesus. If you don’t want me to preach Jesus, please don’t ask me to come.”
During his years as pastor, Charlie served alongside his best friend and Asst. Pastor Russell Hall for 15 years. Russell went home to be with the Lord in 2009.
Charlie was always there for his family, his church, and his community. His grandchildren often felt as if they were traveling around with a celebrity because everywhere they went, everyone knew their Papaw. But there was a reason for that. Charlie answered those folks calls in the middle of the night. He was there with them in the hospitals, and it was Charlie’s prayers that gave them hope.
Brother Charlie always wanted everyone in church. He wanted everyone to know Jesus. After more than 35 years as Pastor at Black Pond, he so graciously retired and became Pastor Emeritus.
Charlie’s ministry also included raising up new preachers. Among them were Joey Floyd of River Road Baptist Church, Harry Conaway Sr. of Long Branch Baptist Church, Chris Padgett of Valiant Baptist Church and Jason Brown, whom Charlie affectionately called his “spiritual son” and who now serves as Senior Pastor of Black Pond Baptist Church. Charlie’s influence reached far beyond the walls of the church. He helped lead thousands of people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. This was his life’s passion because he knew it was what God had called him to do.
