Catherine Louise “Kay” Mahoney, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and storyteller, passed away on May 7, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on June 17, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa, Kay’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and a deep commitment to family and community.
A devoted navy wife, Kay embraced the challenges and adventures of military life with grace and determination. She was also a dedicated educator in the Clay County, Florida School System, touching countless lives with her wisdom and compassion. But above all, she cherished her greatest role—raising her four children: Theresa Mahoney Shuster (Art), Michael Mahoney, III (Katherine), Dennis Mahoney, and Timothy Mahoney (Suzette).
Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Mahoney, Jr, her parents, Frank and Mary (Knowles) Cosgrove; and siblings, Suzanne Floeder, Patricia Steere, Joseph Cosgrove, Eugene Cosgrove, Barabara Sullivan, Lenore Cosgrove, James Cosgrove and Father Jerome Cosgrove.

Kay was a natural storyteller, captivating everyone she met with her tales and warm humor. She had a remarkable ability to bring joy to any gathering, weaving narratives that left lasting impressions. As one of the original families of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Orange Park, Florida, she remained deeply involved in her faith and community, fostering connections and friendships that spanned decades.
Her love extended to her five grandchildren—Katie, Kyle, PJ, Kellen, and Mary Kate—each of whom held a special place in her heart as well as 4 great grandchildren.
Kay’s legacy is one of kindness, devotion, and a life well-lived. Her stories, wisdom, and unwavering spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of her life will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Orange Park, Florida on Saturday, May 31st with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and mass at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Community Hospice, honoring her love of community and service.
