Business Spotlight: Retro Putt Indoor Mini Golf

Burlesons open two courses where they 'create memories'

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – There are no windmills, snapping alligator mouths, spinning barriers or volcanoes at Retro Putt Indoor Mini Golf. But you will find a zip line, pool table, drum set, basketball hoop, plinko and a duck shoot.

“We’re both ‘80s babies,” said co-owner Karima Burleson on how she and her husband, Josh, came up with the idea to incorporate mini golf with interactive challenges at the Cove Plaza, 1417-1 S. Orange Ave. And it’s all inside in a climate-controlled room.

The couple were visiting their nephews in Nebraska five years ago when they played a mini golf course with medieval food and concept. That inspired them to create their own idea to bring back retro-inspired courses with items that were common in the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s – like a Blockbuster obstacle, Tony Hawk skateboard hole, Hot Wheels loop, cup pong, disk golf and a Game Boy.

“We don't sell mini golf. We create memories,” Karima said. “We believe that every family should be able to play affordable mini golf indoors, where they can have fun, laugh together, create those moments and just enjoy one another.”

The couple signed the paperwork to move Retro Putt from idea to reality. Now they have two courses –pink and blue – and each have their own personalities. Players can advance to a closer tee box by completing a retro challenge.

On the blue course, there is a basketball free throw lane where players can take two foul shots. Two misses mean starting the hole from 20 feet. One made shot allows a player to move five feet closer. Two made shots will allow the player to move even closer to the cup.

Also, there is a zip line on the pink course where players can advance forward according to the ride down an incline using gravity.

“God helped us make this come true,” Karima said. “The retro look, it’s all coming back again – the style, the games. How do we bring back iconic retro things to this generation? This brings grandparents together, teaching the young ones. A 5-year-old can play. A 95-year-old can play. You don’t need any special ability. Just come to have a good time and some fun.”

The Burlesons said they’ve started league play on Tuesdays. There are also party rooms for 24 and 32 people, a snack bar, memberships and drink specials. And they supply putters and golf balls.

The ideas are unique to the Burlesons.

“We partnered up with a buddy of mine, and we started building all these displays that you see on the golf course,” Josh said. “About a year ago we put pen to paper. These are all original holes – all built in a shop in Fleming Island.”

Retro Putt is a cashless venue. Reservations and a waiver can be made online at retro-putt.com. And the blue course is accessible to wheelchairs.

It costs $12 to play either course, or $18 to play both, Josh said.

Retro Putt opens at 10 a.m., and it closes at 9 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“And we’re open in any kind of weather,” he said.
