With senior outside hitter Camden Rahn ripping scoring shots throughout the night, Middleburg High School volleyball successfully defended their district 3-5A title with 3-0 win Thursday at the Carrie Prewitt Gym at Middleburg High School.
"I kind of came in with the mindset of playing the best I could and dominating at the net," said Rahn, one of the top scorers in Class 5A as the Broncos attempt to recapture their state title of 2023 under coach Meredith Forkum. "We got some great efforts from everyone on the team with everyone contributing when called upon."
Fleming Island, led by junior outside hitter Lauren Brosky all year, got some big plays above the net from Kaylee Clark who stuffed four straight Rahn blasts in the early games of the match and also added some thunderous scoring shots of her own.
"I've been primarily a block, but the team needed some more offense and Coach Yoder put me in position to score," said Clark. "The team responds when coach needs us to step up in different roles."
For the match, Middleburg was able to win with late game surges while Fleming Island bore the brunt of Rahn's thunderous shots over the net.
"We played one of our best games against one of the best hitters in the state," said Yoder. "They just had a little more firepower and we made some little mistakes at the end, but we'll be back a little smarter in the regions."
In one other completed district final, St. Johns Country Day lost 3-1 to Christ's Church Academy in district 3-1A while Keystone Heights lost 3-0 to Newberry in the 5-3A district final.
Teams will now wait for Sunday's region playoff reveal schedule to see who plays where in the region playoffs.
