GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Clay High senior flag football quarterback Teaghan Moses looked as efficient as ever in a 27-0 season opening win over an ED White team ironically coached by one of Clay High football's most iconic quarterbacks: Ulysses "Boobie" Tobler.
"We emphasize keeping things simple; catch passes, snag flags," said Clay High Coach Jared Moses. "The process is in the execution and little mistakes."
Teaghan, back in full health after a half year start last year due to a yearlong knee rehabilitation, was striking with outside passes to wide outs Charlotte Andrus; all 6-foot-9 of a target, with Charlotte Glavin manning the middle of the field and soccer aces Tatum Waugh and Bella Saunders patrolling the sidelines. Ironically, all three are standout soccer players for the Clay High district champion soccer team.
One athlete missing in the mix was safety Cora Parker, also the soccer team goalie, who was on a college visit and was replaced at her safety spot by Andrus. Parker is a key cog in the Blue Devil bevy of weapons with nine rushing touchdowns and 12 interceptions last year. Parker had four interceptions in a preseason win over Mandarin at the Jacksonville Jaguars preseason festival with defensive back Waugh adding her own pick six in that preseason game.
"Not a bad thing to have those kinds of athletes in the secondary and also on offense," said Moses.
Clay struck fast with Andrus and Waugh combining with a little Hook and Ladder type chicanery just before halftime as Waugh took a short swing pass, scrambled toward the sideline where the Lady Commander defense converged on her quickly only to have the quick-thinking Waugh flip a lateral aka Patrick Mahomes to a trailing Andrus who sprinted aka Jerry Rice to paydirt from about 15 yards out as the half ended.
Fleming Island, in their season opener, missed opportunities in the red zone and fell 12-6 to New Smyrna Beach in a clash of pre-season powerhouses: New Smyrna finishing 12-6 last year and a region semifinalist in Class 2A. New Smyrna lost to Hernando who eventually beat Clay in the state quarterfinal. Hernando lost to Class 2A champion Robinson.
Clay plays next at Gainesville, 1-1, with a loss to St. John Lutheran 20-0 and a win last week, 21-0, over Eastside.
Fleming Island had Global Outreach Academy (0-2) visit on Feb. 26. GOCA lost their second game 47-0 to Mandarin last week.
Global Outreach was the season opener for Oakleaf on Feb. 24.
Orange Park (1-1) won a 6-0 game against Ridgeview in their second game of the season. Orange Park opened with Baldwin, a 20-7 loss. The Raiders traveled to Columbia on Feb. 24. Ridgeview visited Oakleaf on Feb. 26.
Keystone Heights opened regular season play on Feb. 24 with Eastside.
Middleburg opened their season with the Florida School for the Deaf on Feb. 24.
