ORANGE PARK — They say what one person passes by another may treasure.

That's why the Garden Club of Orange Park member Susan Brecht said no one should miss the opportunity to attend their annual Rummage Sale this year.

"You never know what somebody's going to donate," she said.

On Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3, members of the community are invited to sift through countless donated items, like home decor, housewares, tools, gardening supplies, linens, toys and games, DVDs and much more.

"There's probably going to be something there for everybody," she said.

The sale is all in an effort to raise money for the club's annual educational programming.

"This helps us hire speakers to educate the public about gardening in Florida on all levels, whether they're just looking to have flowers in their garden or vegetables, or a wildlife setting. We try to vary the speaker so that there's always something interesting for people to hear about."

Additionally, Brecht said the club donates to other local nonprofits, including the Orange Park High resource room, the Wild Reserve in St. Augustine and the Orange Park Clothes Closet and Food Pantry.

The Garden Club was founded in 1948 with a mission to foster a love of gardening and maintain a tree and bird sanctuary. Since then, that mission has expanded through decades of impactful programs, educational opportunities and community projects from gardeners, floral designers, nature enthusiasts and volunteers.

In addition to monthly business meetings, Brecht said the Garden Club provides and plants flowers at the Carrie Clarke House in spring, decorates the garden for Hometown Christmas in Orange Park and provides floral arrangements for Carrie Clarke Day.

They also recently replanted the raised bed planter at the Orange Park Library with native wildflowers and placed literature from the Florida Wildflower Foundation to encourage people to "plant native."

Brecht said they encourage those interested in learning more to get involved.

The rummage sale will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1820 Smith St. Although clothes will not be sold, there will possibly be shoes and boots available for purchase, Brecht said.
