ORANGE PARK – It doesn’t matter if you run, walk, roll or cheer from the sidelines at the BASCA CapeABILITIES 5K/1M event on Saturday, Sept. 27, because it’s more than an opportunity to don your cape and traverse through town streets.

The annual event is a celebration of community, strength and capabilities that supports everyone of all abilities – and a chance to show your inner superhero nature.

On-site registration starts at 7 a.m., while the running event is from 8 a.m. until noon at the BASCA headquarters at 352 Stowe Ave., south and across the street from the Orange Park Fire Department. Proceeds will help BASCA place emergency generators in their group homes that support residents with intellectual and developmental differences.

BASCA has evolved into a multifaceted organization whose mission is to provide better living, working, educational, social and recreational opportunities for adults with special needs. One of the organization’s primary funding sources is the annual CapeABILITIES Run.

Runners will receive a commemorative race T-shirt, a goodie bag and a finisher medal. Runners participating in the 5K are eligible for overall and age group awards. Additionally, chip timing and finish line photos are available for all 5K and Fun Run participants.

BASCA is thrilled to have Ainsleys Angels participating in the CapeABILITIES 5K and Fun Run.

The fee for the 5K and virtual 5K is $45, while the one-mile fun run is $30.

BASCA encourages teams of at least 10 runners, and teams will be given dedicated space for changing and storing equipment.

There will also be contests for the best capes, including Most Creative, Best Youth (younger than 12) and Best Team-Themed. Capes will be judged before the start of the race, and the winners will be announced during the awards ceremony after the races are completed.
