Two-day event provides peek inside lives of local artists

CLAY COUNTY — Established artists, crafters and gardeners from all over the county came together to showcase some of their best work last week.

In partnership with the Fleming Island Garden Club and the Garden Club of Orange Park, the Art Guild of Orange Park hosted a studio tour on May 16-17, dedicated to community members getting a peek at the talent that lies just outside their doorsteps.

“We’ve had neighbors say they often wondered what you were doing in that building. And then they got to come in. So, they hear that they have a neighbor that’s an artist and this gives them the opportunity to meet them,” said Phyllis Renninger, president of the Art Guild of Orange Park.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests had 11 stops to choose from around the county, seeing the creative spaces of local artists, chatting with them in-person and buying a selection of ready-to-purchase artwork.

Additionally, both garden clubs had their own sites dedicated to selling plants and garden art, and giving helpful tips for those interested in horticulture. The Garden Club of Orange Park President Kay Earhart said she was thrilled to partner with the guild and even host some artists at their center’s stop.

Renninger said one of the reasons the Guild put on the event was to promote shopping locally and celebrate those within the community.

“The other thing that we’re really focusing on is all the new buildings, homes going up in Clay County. Where do they go for their art? They go on the internet or they go to Jacksonville, when we have all of this talent here that can custom-design paintings for them,” she said.

After visiting at least six of the stops, guests were also eligible to participate in a raffle and win a special prize.

What was once a vacant plot of land behind the building has grown into a vast bed of bright flowers and tasty produce, which the students grow and maintain.
