JACKSONVILLE - Ridgeview High volleyball coach Destiny Brightman may think twice about asking for favors from region playoff rival Bishop Kenny.
“The last two years, we have won the district but faced them in the region playoffs without ever having seen them in season play,” said Brightman. “Now, we finally get to see them in their preseason classic. We’ll see how that goes.”
Brightman, who in her first district title season, beat Bishop Kenny in one of their region playoff games two years ago before losing, knows about the gym’s aura at Kenny.
“They are always tough to beat at home,” said Brightman. “On that night, we got them, but the emotional energy for us was overwhelming and, of course, they regrouped after we beat them and got it back.”
On Saturday, at Bishop Kenny, in their annual preseason classic, Brightman won’t be playing 6A state semifinalist Bishop Kenny, but she will get a close look at the possible playoff rival.
Also in the mix at the Kenny tournament will be Middleburg and Fleming Island as well as power teams from 5A-state semifinalist Bolles, 8A region semifinalist Tallahassee Lincoln, Tallahassee Chiles, 6A state runnerup Ponte Vedra, 5A-region semifinalist Episcopal, 4A region semifinalist Providence and 8A region finalist Creekside with games beginning on two courts at 9 a.m.
At 9 a.m., Fleming Island will play Bolles with the Golden Eagles up at bat for a 10:30 a.m. start against Bishop Kenny.
At 1:30 p.m., Middleburg will play Chiles while Ridgeview takes on Providence. Ridgeview comes back at 3 p.m. to play Creekside while Middleburg is back on the court at 4 p.m. against Providence.
Also on tap Saturday is the Clay High preseason tournament with Keystone Heights and Baker County set to compete.
