RHS Sampson, CHS Catlett get track district titles

JACKSONVILLE – Ridgeview High triple jumper Jacolbi Sampson and Clay High discus thrower Kelley Catlett earned district track titles at the District 4-2A track championships held Tuesday at the Bolles School. Bolles dominated the fields for both the boys and girls team scores with 199 points and 245.50 points, respectively.

Bishop Kenny was a distant second for the boys with 116 points with Ridgeview fourth with 77 and Clay sixth with 46.

For the girls, Episcopal was second with 1-2.50 with Ridgeview sixth with 50 and Clay seventh with 49.

Top for finishers advance to the region 1-2A championship meet to be held April 25 at Florida High School in Tallahassee.

Sampson, with a 41 foot measure in the preliminaries of the triple jump leading the finals’ lineup, punched in for the win with a 42’-8” leap over Tristan Willis of Menendez; second at 41’-5”. Sampson was third in last year’s district meet at 42’-7.5” then ninth at regions at 41’-7.75”.

Clay’s Jared Glisson took third to also advance to regions with a 41’-4” leap.

For the girls, Ridgeview’s Crystal Hunter took third in the triple jump with a 35’-3” leap to winner Caroline Johnston of Episcopal who won at 36’-4”. Hunter also finished third in the long jump in 16’-2” to Johnston’s winning leap at 18’-4”. Hunter was fourth in last year’s district meet at 34’-2”then finished 11th at regions at 33’-4.75”.

In the discus, Catlett and teammate Alissa Williford took first and second with Catlett winning at 101’-8” Williford runnerup at 96’-2.” Catlett was district champion last year at 103’-7” with Williford also second at 90’-5”. Catlett finished sixth at regions last year at 105’-4” with Williford eighth.

In the shot put, Ridgeview’s Grier Burrows finished second ahead of Clay’s Tianna Nichols to advance with throws of 32’-4” and 31’-5”. Winner Kayla Walker of Menendez threw 34’-3”. Burrows was third last year at 32’-10” with Nichols seventh. At regions, Burrows finished eighth at 33’-3.25”.

Two other athletes with runnerup finishes; top four advance to regions, were Ridgeview high jumper Jaden Roy who was second in his event with a strong 6’-4” leap to winner Cameron Harris of Wolfson who won with a 6’-6”. Roy finished third last year at 6’-.75”, but only jumped 5’-8” at regions for 11th.

“I’m more confident with my steps this year and it’s getting more consistent,” said Roy.

Roy’s teammate Matthew Koziolek finished fourth just ahead of Clay’s Ajay Belanger to advance. Roy finished fifth in the 300 hurdles as well.

In the hurdles events, Clay’s Samantha Franco finished second at 49.46 in the 300 meter hurdles behind winner Shekinah Sanders of Bolles who won in 46.84. Franco improved from sixth last year in 51.09.

In the boys 110 high hurdles, Clay High’s Aaron Weber held off Ridgeview’s Joaquin Castro in third and fourth place finishes in 16.49 and 16.77. Winner Brandon Hendley of Westside won in 15.72. Castro was third in the 110 hurdles last year in 17.06. Castro finished sixth in the 300 hurdles. At last year’s region meet, Castro finished 12th in the 110 hurdles in 17.05.

In the sprints, Ridgeview’s Trai Cooper and Clay’s Christian Swilley finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 meters with Ridgeview’s Gary McClendon taking sixth in the 200.

In the 400, Koziolek had the fourth fastest preliminary time, but finished fifth by .02 in the final in 52.72 with Isiaih Morris of Bolles winning in 51.05. Koziolek was fourth last year in 54.23.

In relay events, Clay and Ridgeview both advanced 4 x 100 relay squads with Clay third in 45.43 and Ridgeview fourth in 45.50. Winners Westside clocked 42.88.

Ridgeview’s 4 x 400 relay finished fourth to advance to regions with a 4:19.17 time. Winner Bolles clocked 4:03.52.

In boys 4 x 800, Clay finished fourth in 9:09:81 just ahead of Ridgeview with Bishop Kenny winning in 8:57.70.

In the distance races, though no area runners advanced with top four finishes, Ridgeview’s Elias Perez took fifth in 2:03.95 in the 800 won in 1:52.78 by Bolles Chase Rivera; Ridgeview’s Marisa Kortright took sixth in 2:30.31 in the 800 won by Bolles Caitlin Collier in 2:16.48; Ridgeview’s Joel Nesi took fifth in the 1600 in 4:45.63 won in 4:18.69 by Bishop Kenny’s Nathan Jubran and 10th in the 3200 in 10:42.43 won by Bolles Charles Hicks in 9:22.35.

Last year, Perez finished 11th in the 800 in 2:12.45 with Nesi fifth in the 1600 in 4:49.07. Nesi was sixth in the 3200 last year in 10:06.91.
