OAKLEAF - After a 10-0 demolition of district 2-8A rival Atlantic Coast High, one of just two teams to score a victory over the Oakleaf High softball team, the Lady Knights will be facing Wharton High of Tampa in the region 1-8A final on Fri., May 12 in Tampa.
Oakleaf scorched Tallahassee Lincoln by a 10-0 score just a week ago and the Atlantic Coast Stingrays had no answer to the batting lineup of the Knights who scored three of their runs solely off intimidation as the Stingrays' defense had no answers to thwart the strong batting averages of coach Christina Thompson scorecard.
?With senior pitching ace Kelsey Sweatt opening the game, the Knights bombarded Atlantic Coast ace Taylor Bauman for four runs in the Knights first at-bats with a slew of walks, field errors, stolen bases and a monster two run triple from Baylee Goddard fueling the blitzkrieg.
Sweatt answered with three strikeouts to Atlantic Coast.
In the bottom of the second, the score deficit increased off two walks, two passed balls and an error off a hard grounder from Angela Agurkis to go up 7-0.
Sweatt answered with two flyouts and a strikeout.
Oakleaf finish the game with singles from Mika Garcia, Tracey Ferguson and Destiny Pacetti to go 10-0.
Wharton, the 4-8A champions over Strawberry Crest, who beat Oakleaf in last year's region final, beat Strawberry Crest a fourth time 11-4 in their region semifinal to advance to play Oakleaf on May 12 in Tampa. Wharton comes in with a 17-5 overall record.
