MSU soccer women head to Sweet 16

STARKVILLE, MS - With former Oakleaf High School soccer scoring machine Hannah Johnson lending her cannon leg to the Mississippi State University women's soccer team, the Lady Bulldogs have earned a ticket to the NCAA Div I Sweet 16 round of the national championship tournament with a 1-0 win over Providence in round one and a recent 2-1 win over No. 3 Brown University on Fri., Nov. 17.

Against Providence on November 11, a defensive slugfest ensued for the regular 110 minutes of play before MSU scored early in the first overtime to win the contest. MSU had never won a round of 32 games.

Against No. 3 seed Brown, played in Palo Alto, California, the Lady Bulldogs were down 1-0 with a second-half score by Brown but answered with a scored in the 69th minute and a second goal just seven minutes later for the win.

Mississippi State (12-5-5), the sixth seed, is scheduled to play No. 2 Stanford (17-0-4) in the Elite 8 on Sun., Nov. 19. at 4 p.m.
