Reader concerned for both families in tragedy
I mourn the line of duty death of CCSO Deputy Ben Zirbel and pray for comfort for his family. I also pray for comfort for the driver of the other vehicle in the crash, Mr. Schioppa, who I know well as a decent, hardworking small business owner.
Without detracting in any way from the tragedy of Deputy Zirbel’s death, this accident has caused me to wonder why police officers would routinely use motorcycles for patrol duty. Surely, the safety, communications and other technical capabilities of a regular cruiser provide a safer, more effective platform for the officer than a motorcycle.
