ORANGE PARK – After getting ousted from post season play by the Wolfson High School Wolfpack last year, the Orange Park High girls basketball team evened the score just a little bit with a 67-32 blowout district win on November 28 at Orange Park High School.
“We had a good pre-season and the first game was kind of rough and we got back into our groove in the second game on Creekside (a 58-45 win Nov. 16),” said Raider coach Fred Cole, now 5-1 with a loss to 8A-Bartram Trail in their season opener. “I told them if you can’t get up for the first home game; first district game; first game of the season; if you can’t get up for that, then something is wrong.”
Orange Park continued its winning swing with wins over Westside (55-42) and, at the Turkey Shootout at Keystone Heights on Sat., Dec. 2, Keystone Heights (58-23) and Menendez (46-31)
Against Wolfson, Orange Park was tied at the end of the first quarter, 13-13. Then the Lady Raiders showed they were up for opening night as they put on a defense clinic to hold Wolfson to two second quarter points, going into the locker room up 33-15 at the half. The Raiders, with just seven varsity players, would continue to pillage the Wolfpack to go on to an awesome 68-32 opening night district win.
Guard Yolyvette Rosado, a sophomore, went on a tear right out of the box as she racked up 22 points on the night. Rosado would hit five three pointers on nine attempts and only be fouled once, hitting one of two free throws. Tori Cole was right behind Rosado bringing home 13 points using two field goals on her two attempts and hitting three of four foul shots.
The Raider defense was on fire in the second quarter.
“My thing is I want to preach defense” Coach Cole said. “I mean, we shoot the ball a lot. The three’s look good and all that, but at the end of the day, defense wins games. That’s what we work on everyday in practice.”
That defense stepped up bigtime in eight minutes of play of the second quarter with the only points allowed being two foul shots. The Wolfpack were held to three attempts on the basket for the entire quarter! Out of the locker room in the third, the Raider defense again put on a show, holding Woldson to six shots that yielded only nine points as the Raiders had their best offensive quarter racking up 21 points.
“I thought we got a little rhythm going and the offense did well,” said Cole. “We played predominantly zone and wanted to work our man defense, especially in the third quarter. I thought we turned the ball over allot, we did it without reaching, we slid our feet, I thought we did pretty good.”
Also in district 4-6A, Ridgeview sits at 1-2 overall with a win ovger Trinity Christian, 34-25, in their season opener with losses to Menendez (42-16) and Oakleaf (69-18).
