Lady Indians' defense thwarts Trinity Catholic

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - Keystone Heights High School's girls flag football team picked off two Trinity Catholic passes to seal a 21-6 district 5-1A win Tuesday night at Keystone Heights High School.

Though safety Hayley Julius and Dee Dee Taylor both snagged two errant Trinity Catholic passes in the second half, it was Taylor who stole a pick-six for the final score of the night with 1:51 left in the game.

Taylor's pick-six came on the first play after a Trinity interception of a Julius pass on the goal line stopped a possible Indian score.

In the first quarter, Trinity Catholic had the upper hand on interception with a steal in the end zone on a Keystone Heights' halfback option play.

In the second quarter, with the game still tied at 0-0, Julius nearly snared a one-handed pick on the first play of the stanza to keep the Indians' defense sharp.

At quarterback, Julius was intent on spreading the field with the speed of Taylor and Almira Jones on the perimeter and the inside passcatching ability of Jade Bishop who caught the first touchdown of the night from about 15 yards out near the six minutes to go mark.

Taylor's first pick of the night, also a scoring play, was negated by a penalty flag and Trinity Catholic took advantage of the miscue by driving to their only score of the night to tie the game at 6-6 with 12 seconds to the break.

After the score, Julius found Jones on a 35 yard pass play that was extended with a penalty flag that put Keystone Heights inside the 30 yard line with one untimed play left before the half. Keystone Heights did not score.

In the third quarter, an interception by Julius set up a 12 yard scoring pass over the middle to Jones in a crowd of Trinity defensive players just inside the goal line put the Indians up 12-6 with Bishop adding one on the point after on a short pass over the middle.

On the ensuing offensive series by Trinity Catholic, it was Julius tipping a pass away from a Trinity receiver into the hand of Jones who returned the ball inside the 10 yard line for an apparent incoming Keystone Heights score.

Trinity Catholic held off Keystone Heights and got the ball on downs, but Keystone Heights' defense trapped the Trinity quarterback in the end zone on the first play for a two-point play and a 15-6 lead with 11:03 to go.

With neither team able to move the ball efficiently on their ensuing drives, Trinity got their end zone interception with 2:08 left in the game to stop an Indians' drive. On the very next play, Taylor swept in front of a pass and took the ball the 30 yards to paydirt for the games final score.
