Williams makes another routine blood donation – for the 1,000th time

ORANGE PARK – Binion Williams is more than a regular at OneBlood. He’s family.

The 77-year-old Army veteran from Middleburg made his customary stop at the facility at 2153 Kingsley Ave. last Tuesday before a round of golf. But for everyone at the donation center, it was far from routine.

Williams was there to reach the 125-gallon plateau, which means he’s now donated 1,000 pints of blood in the past 60 years.

“It’s just like any other day,” he said. “I don’t know how many lives I’ve saved. I just like to help.”

Most donations are the result of another family member needing blood, Williams said. He started giving in 1961 after he heard of a boy who was injured in a car accident. And he’s been giving since.

Less than two dozen people have reached the 125-gallon mark, OneBlood said.

“I want new donors not to be scared,” he said. “Just don’t go skydiving or SCUBA diving. You can get a headache.”

Apparently, it’s all right to play golf, though.

OneBlood unfolded a banner and provided Williams with a cake to mark the milestone.
