DALLAS – Oakleaf High School football graduate Chris Westry, now a signee of the National Football Leagues’ Dallas Cowboys, has been making many of the Cowboys’ football bloggers radar after a good showing at May-June OTAs.

Westry, who finished a stellar four years of playing time at the University of Kentucky as a 6’-4” defensive back with 4.3 second 40 yard speed and a 72 inch wingspan, was picked up the Cowboys as one of 18 undrafted free agent signings.

In a report at ASEAOfBlue.com which tracks Kentucky athletes, Westry’s 40 yard time was third best of all NFL combine splits.

“Only two players that participated in the the entire NFL Combine ran a better time, one with 4.29 and the other with 4.30,” reported Shelby Caudill in an April 27 article. “The Cowboys are giving Westry a shot, and I think it’s a chance that’ll pay off in the long run.”

According to Westry, who had a Dallas Cowboy Pro Day visit with the Cowboys after the NFL Draft, said his prospect was good when he left.

“They called me right after the draft and told me they wanted to sign me quickly,” said Westry, in a phone call while in Jacksonville in April. “They liked me in the tryout and workout.”

Former Oakleaf High football coach Derek Chipoletti, now head coach at St. Johns Country Day School, commented that Westry’s work ethic will be a big factor in his NFL success.

“Chris was always a great athlete,” said Chipoletti, who orchestrated Westry and a handful of notable athletes including University of Miami senior linebacker Shaquille Quarterman (senior ALL-ACC), Wake Forest junior offensive lineman Je’Vionte Nash and University of South Florida safety Nick Roberts (sophomore) produce an undefeated season and a region finals playoff berth in 2014. “His hard work and determination allowed him to hone his football skills and have the opportunity he has. He is a great representative of his family, Oakleaf High School and the Clay County community.”

On the bloggers scene in Dallas and nationwide, Westry is getting plenty of positive chats about his incredible physical presence with mention of his speed and reach.

According to Bryan Broaddus, a football analyst for DallasCowboys.com, Westry was impressive looking on first sight.

“It’s not often that you see a cornerback that’s over 6’-4”, “ wrote Broaddus in a May 10 blog. “The challenge for these coaches will be to work with Westry on his ability to open and turn. His legs are so long that he’s not going to look quick doing it.”

Broaddus noted that Westry was lined up with Michael Jackson, a Cowboy rookie fifth round draft choice from the University of Miami, and was a bit slower out of his backpedal.

“There were a couple of snaps where he was paired with Mike Jackson, who was able to get turned around much quicker than Westry out of his pedal,” wrote Broaddus. “Jackson is three inches shorter, but like Westry he has long legs too.”

In a May writing by Broaddus and colleague Rob Phillips, Westry was in with a group of three athletes vying for a cornerback spot; Donovan Olumba, a second year player out of Portland State, and Jackson, the other two.

“Westry might get a look at safety which could make him valuable.” wrote Broaddus. “Jackson is already playing some in the slot so they clearly have plans for him.”

Phillips thought Olumba may have a slight edge on the trio.

“It’s kind of fascinating watching Westry play back there because he’s so much taller than everyone,” wrote Phillips. “The Cowboys believe he’s athletic enough to do it, so it’ll be about refining technique at this point.”
