• The Clay County School Board expresses concern after the state mandates building design, construction and inspection standards be lumped into a single code – a change that will cost the county $390,000 in the next 16 months.

• Sulia King, 62, dies in a fire that started with a kerosene heater at her home at 211 N. First St., in Green Cove Springs.

• The Green Cove Springs City Council votes against a proposed Walgreen’s to be built at the Qui Si Sana Hotel site.

30 years ago, 1991

• Brothers Dwight and Larry Hackworth of Green Cove Springs are deployed to the Middle East to serve in Operation Desert Storm.

• The Clay County Planning Commission denies a plan to build a residential planned unit development community in Penney Farms.

• The Green Cove Springs City Council decides to hold the Augusta Savage Festival on April 20.

40 years ago, 1981

• The Clay County Commission drafts a resolution that asks Camp Blanding, which comprises nearly 17% of the county’s land area, to start paying taxes.

• The roof at Brunson Furniture Store catches fire, creating smoke and water damage to the second floor.

• The county commissioners voted unanimously to make the Clay County Crescent as its only legal publication. The Clay County Crescent eventually became the Clay Today.
