• Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy Eric Twisdale was remembered for his courage and compassion when he was laid to rest after dying of COVID-19. Twisdale was a supervisor of the Crime Scene Unit.

• The Board of County Commissioners approved the 2020-21 budget without an increase in the millage rate, but with an increase in property values, the budget is expected to increase.

• Despite being cancelled by the pandemic, the Clay County Agriculture Fair won eight awards from the Florida Festivals and Events Associations.

• The Plantation Oaks Boulevard repair project wins the Florida Region’s Transportation Award for making quick repairs over the North Prong Double Branch.

• The support staff union from the Clay County District Schools files an unfair labor practice complaint against the district in connection with a late payment due for work completed before schools opened.

• The Board of County Commissioners withdraws from the Florida Regional Planning Council interlocal agreement to keep local money closer to home.

20 years ago, 2005

• The Department of Environmental Protection fined clay County $155,000 for illegal dumping at seven county-run sites.

• After a three-year hiatus, Ham Jam, the “Florida’s official Bar-B-Que Cooking Contest,” returns to Reynolds Park Yacht Center.

• The Green Cove Springs City Council votes to opt out its agreement with the Florida Municipal Power Agency and sell its electric company when its agreement ends in 2035.

30 years ago, 1995

• Market Basket in Green Cove Springs decides to close on the corner of State Road 16 and U.S. Highway 17 after serving customers since July 20, 1978.

• The Board of County Commissioners decided not to raise taxes for the 1995-96 fiscal budget, keeping the millage rate at 8.4585.

• Karin Arnold is crowned Homecoming Queen at Middleburg High.
