• Former Middleburg resident Mark D’Ambrosio made the final cut to appear on the History Channel’s Alone after spending five weeks in the Oregon wilderness.

• Construction started on an expansion project at the Augusta Savage Library and Mentoring Center in Green Cove Springs.

• The Clay Chamber organizes a drive-thru teacher appreciation event where teachers got $100 worth of supplies ahead of the Aug. 25 first day of school.

10 years ago, 2015

• Allegations of abuse forced state officials to temporarily close and investigate one group home that houses adults with intellectual disorders, and take steps to cease funding from the state’s Medicaid waiver program that funds three other homes operated by the nonprofit organization BASCA, Inc. The group home was reoponed following the investigation.

• Baptist Health applied to build an $80 million hospital on Fleming Island on Village Square Parkway.

• The Green Cove Springs City Council tentatively approved a $50 a year electric rate hike during a city hall meeting.

20 years ago, 2005

• Citing rapid growth in the Oakleaf community, the Clay County School Board voted to build a new elementary school a year ahead of schedule.

• The Clay County Planning Commission approved plans to build a new Walmart Supercenter on Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park.

• Baptist Health said it wanted to build a 92-bed, $100 million hospital on Fleming Island.

30 years ago, 1995

• The Green Cove Springs City Council votes for the 13th consecutive year to freeze its millage rate at 2.611.

• Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Frederic A. Buttner sentenced David Wayne Walden of Alabama to 30 years in prison for two counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, armed kidnapping and aggravated battery after robbing a fireworks tent on Blanding Boulevard in 1994.

• Town Manager John Bowles tells Orange Park Council it should raise the annual millage rate from 5.0 to 5.3.

40 years ago, 1985

• Thomas Frances Tate of Jacksonville was arrested by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly critically shooting his girlfriend, Arlene Coburn of Orange Park, in the head.

• The annual crime report showed aggravated assaults increased by 122% from 1984 to 1985, jumping from 72 to 160, in Clay County.

• The BCC passed a tentative budget of $28.4 million, which included $1.7 million to expand the county courthouse and $700,000 to expand the county jail.
