• Gabriella Manges walked into the Orange Park Medical Center. She enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with her family to thank her doctors and staff six months after she suffered life-threatening injuries in a car crash on the on-ramp of Interstate 295 and U.S. Highway 17.

• The newly created Orange Park Visioning Committee met for the first time to start crafting five goals for a long-range plan for the town’s future.

• The Clay County Tourism Development Council reported a 16.18% jump in bed taxes and approved a $30,000 grant for the JC Penney Museum.

 

10 years ago, 2014

• Fifteen men were sentenced to between three-to-10 years in prison following a 2013 sex sting, “Operation Wrong Direction.”

• Oakleaf High teacher Steven Cooper was one of six educators honored by Gov. Rick Scott’s Governor Shine Award for serving in the U.S. military and contributing to Florida’s students.

• Wayne Bolla and Gavin Rollins were sworn in as council members to the Board of County Council after winning their elections, while Diane Hutchings is selected as the board’s chairwoman.

 

20 years ago, 2004

• Florida Reps. Jennifer Carrol and Aaron Bean were elected Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, of the Clay County Legislative Delegation in preparation for the 2005 session of the Florida Legislature.

• The Clay County Chamber of Commerce prepared to host a Super Celebration, with Jacksonville hosting the Feb. 6, 2005, Super Bowl.

 

30 years ago, 1994

• The Clay County School Board approved a site for Fleming Island Elementary and a phase III plan for constructing McRae Elementary north of Keystone Heights.

• Residents opposed a plan to build a new landfill in Clay County and supported a plan to partner with Nassau County for solid waste disposal services.

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 men and women in a drug sting operation that started 11 months earlier.

 

40 years ago, 1984

• The No. 1 ranked Middleburg High football team was to face Robert E. Lee in the first round of the state playoffs.

• Florida Rep. Chance Irvin geared up for her new role in Tallahassee after defeating longtime House member Rep. Frank Williams of Starke.

• Clay County McDonald’s franchise owner Karen King thanked county residents for having a role in selling the chain’s 50th-billionth hamburger.
