• Sweet Homegrown Traditions, an exhibit celebrating Clay County’s contributions to the Southern Rock movement, including Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant, opened at the Thrasher-Horne Center. The Clay County Clerk of Court and Comproller’s Office prepared the exhibit and attended by Johnny Van Zant and original Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Larry Junstrom.
• A documentary on Eagle Harbor resident Jim Tucker, who played for the 1955 Syracuse Nationals, won an Emmy Award from the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Chapter.
• Middleburg’s Michaela Harris is reunited with her Yorkshire Terrier Buddy after the dog ran away from home eight years earlier while she was at school.
10 years ago, 2014
• A New York animal welfare agency awards the Clay County Animal Care and Control $40,000 for its work to save animals from euthanasia.
• The Clay County Planning Commission heard from more than 40 residents who want the county to tighten its regulations on adult entertainment businesses.
• Three Middleburg men, Brandon E. Hygema, Dyland T. Pierce and Madison T. Chase, were charged with attempted second-degree murder after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said the three men chased got into a fight with someone at a party, then they chased the person and four of his friends for 15 miles before they used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot into their truck.

• Hurricane Jeanne forced Clay County residents to take precautions as power outages, downed trees and tornadoes cropped up in the wake of the storm.
• Students at Clay High celebrated the opening of the new Senior Pavilion where 12th graders can have lunch outside the cafeteria
30 years ago, 1994
• A time capsule was buried at Tynes Elementary off Old Jennings Road, north of Middleburg, by the Clay County District Schools.
• Keystone Heights City Councilman Bruce Peters resigned after disclosing he moved to Lake City.
40 years ago, 1984
• The Board of County Commission adopted new regulations requiring new subdivisions to be platted and recorded with the county before construction, to better delineate property lines.
• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the boating death of Thomas Logan Murphy of Jacksonville, who was thrown from his boat while fishing in Lake Asbury.
• Turnout was 21% for a runoff election, according to Supervisor of Elections Lanny Lancaster.
