Swirl Suites puts its own twist on ice cream

ORANGE PARK — Swirl Suites has set up shop just outside of the Orange Park Mall, putting its own twist on the ice cream sundae.  You may have enjoyed scoops of ice cream in a cone or a bowl before, but have you ever had it rolled?

Rolled ice cream, also known as "stir-fried ice cream," sets Swirl Suites apart from other ice cream parlors.

The rolled ice cream station is located toward the back of Swirl Suites, underneath a sign reading: "They see me rollin'." Customers can peer in through the window and watch the delicious frozen dessert come to fruition.

The dairy base and other ingredients are spread over a cold plate, often 19 degrees below zero or colder. Once frozen, the ice cream is rolled up into swirls and served with whipped cream, syrups or other toppings at the customer's request.

"It makes for a fun experience," manager Tracey Chandler said.

"When the rolled ice cream is being made, customers can see it being made. They're able to be involved in the experience," she said.

Swirl Suites is at 1910 Wells Road, No. C02, the former Maggie Moo's. It's a short walk from Books-A-Million and AMC Theatres Orange Park.

Chandler said she's excited to start serving Swirl Suite's fall menu, which was released last weekend. The shop also sells traditional sundaes, milkshakes, waffle cones and ice cream nachos — made with waffle cone pieces as the chips.
