JACKSONVILLE - No surprises as the Region 1-1A track and field championships except that no records set by the Matthew Stratton/Graham Myers duo plus “the other guy” Stanley “Walker” Cowherd as the St. Johns Country Day School trio walked (or ran, better yet) away with a handful of gold medals from the region 1-1A track and field championships held Wednesday at Bishop Snyder High School.

Stratton, the Class 1A champ in cross country, kept his keel on the course with wins in the 1600 and 3200; third in the 800, with teammate Graham Myers on his wing except for the 800, just like he did a week ago also to accompany Stratton to the Wednesday Class 1A championships at the University of Florida.

Stratton dropped a bit of the gas pedal in the 1600 with a 4:22.71 split that was a hair above his 4:16 best while whisking through a 2;00.53 800 for third place.

Stratton dropped a 9:39.09 jog on the 3200; Myers at 9:51.21 in second with Stratton having a 9:06 and 9:08 in his holster from a few weeks ago; both solo flights.

For Cowherd, the long jump and 400 offered top times and leaps with the wily veteran going 50.44 for the one-lapper after getting a second place 20’-7.75” long jump on his first attempt. Cowherd just missed in the 200 with a sixth place 22.96 but will join Richard Nichols with the Stratton/Myers twins in the 4 x 800 with their second place finish. Shotputter Thomas Keenan was ninth with a 41’-1.5’ put.

For the Lady Spartans, junior Ava Johnson held on for a fourth in the 400 to advance with a 1:01.48 split.

Stratton (II), sister Rebecca had one of her best 1600s with a sixth place 5:42, but did anchor the fourth place 4 x 800 relay with Sofia Conde, Evelyn Hanson and Sarah Robinson. Both 4 x 400s were seventh.

In discus, Ashlyn Rose was ninth with a 88’-2” toss.
