SJR State student spotlight: Meet Kyara

ORANGE PARK – St. Johns River State College frequently highlights a student from Clay County. This week, Kyara, 33, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Management program at the school in Orange Park, is featured.

Kyara, what influenced your
decision to enroll at SJR State?

I explored a few different colleges before committing to SJR State. What drew me to this school, and was ultimately my deciding factor, was that every interaction I had with faculty members felt genuine. To this day, I feel that my success is just as important to them as it is to me, and that any questions I have to feel valid and are promptly answered. The teachers are very well equipped to lead their students. Overall, it’s a very reassuring environment that’s driven by student success.

What inspired you to enroll
in the Organizational
Management program?

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with supervisors and colleagues who inspire each other to reach their full potential. My manager pulled me aside one day and counseled me on the doors of opportunity that could come from pursuing a business degree. With the positive experience I’ve had from my first two years at SJR State (AA degree), I found that the Organizational Management program closely aligned with my career and educational goals. I started working on my bachelor’s degree in January, and I have a goal of completing my degree within the next two to three years.

How do you believe your time at SJR State has been most
beneficial?

All of the courses I have taken so far for my bachelor’s degree have given me knowledge and inspiration on how to perform my current job more effectively. I have been able to implement new practices, better communication skills, and different thought processes to be more concise in my communications with clients and colleagues. Improving my professional presence has been a great self-esteem boost. I currently work as a claims adjuster at Senate Forwarding, Inc., a military logistics company.

What has been your toughest challenge as a student?

I am a full-time employee and single parent, so I found it a bit of a challenge to incorporate schooling in between the demands of my life. In order to commit to my educational dreams, it was a top priority to be in a school environment that allowed me to be flexible.
When I found out about the vast number of online courses at SJR State, I felt more comfortable taking on another layer of responsibility, while still being home and accessible to my family.

How do you hope to make your biggest impact in your
community with your degree?

I believe our community is only as great as the people in it. I would love to be an inspiration to my community. Having an education - having that knowledge - is a great self-investment that no one can take from you.
There’s no deadline on getting a degree, so even if it’s one or two classes at a time, I would love to encourage my peers, family, friends, and any other people I meet to go ahead and take the opportunity to invest in themselves. ‘You are so worth it!’

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I want to be a homeowner with a great career in the management field and a retirement plan that’ll provide security for my family.
