ORANGE PARK – Fanny Smith is enrolled in the Medical Assisting program at St. Johns River State College. Fanny, 56, is gaining the skills to perform administrative and clinical duties in a variety of medical settings – it’s the best of both worlds. Her skills include phlebotomy (drawing blood), electrocardiograph aide, taking vital signs, medical billing and records.
The Clay County resident answered a variety of questions about her experience at SJR State College, including:
What inspired your interest in the medical assisting program?
I have been in the medical field before as an x-ray technologist and wanted to pursue a different avenue of healthcare at this point in my life. I love to help people and provide a valuable service.
What do you like most about the program?
I enjoy being in a program with the same people the whole time. It helps to develop familiarity, friendships and camaraderie. I enjoy my teachers, as well as learning hands-on procedures.
What have you learned about yourself during the program?
You are never too old to pursue what you want out of life. I've also learned that my brain still works! Thank goodness! Being challenged is a good thing.
What advice would you give to those considering enrolling in the program?
Go for it! If you want to make a difference and pursue a career in the medical field, this is a great school.
Why did you select SJR State for your training?
I selected SJR State for its affordability of the program and the proximity to my home. I had looked to see if they had the program in the past, and then realized that they had it this year in Orange Park, which helped me to make my decision.
How have you been adapting to academic changes during COVID-19?
I have adapted well to the changes during COVID-19. We are hybrid, which is nice, because it gives us a good mix of online and in-person schooling.
Additional comments?
It has been great to have something positive to keep me busy and focused during this difficult time.
