FLEMING ISLAND – A woman was shot Tuesday when she had a gun when Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies answered a call about a person threatening “suicide by law enforcement.”
Sheriff Michelle Cook said the woman was transported to a local hospital. She was in surgery after being shot at the Cobblestone at Eagle Harbor apartment complex at 1717 County Road 220.
CCSO received a call at 4:15 p.m. from a family member who said the woman was having “suicidal ideologies,” Cook said. From the time the agency received the 911 call until the shooting was only about three minutes.
“The deputies showed up and very quickly made a little way up to her apartment,” Cook said. “What we know right now is that she came out of the apartment with a gun, and our deputies shot her."
The identities of the deputies were not revealed.
“They had no other option. It happened in a matter of a couple of seconds,” she said.
Cook said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting. The deputies were not injured.
“They are off-site right now talking with their families and our critical incident stress management team,” Cook said.
