GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Thousands of kilt-clad patrons filled the Clay County Fairgrounds – literally – last Saturday for the 27th annual Northeast Florida Scottish Games and Festival. And with the overwhelming success came traffic that was backed up past Clay High to the east and Penney Farms to the west. But once you got inside, the atmosphere was festive with Scottish heritage, music, dancing, athletics, harps, bagpipes, drums and classic food. Some of the winners included: drum major – Michael Craven (novice drum major); solo piping – Steven MacDonald (piping Grade 1), Gemma Briggs (piping Grade 2), David Spurlock (piping Grade 3), Laura Romine (piping Grade 4), Jeb Bruner (piping Grade 5) and Christopher Hanson (piping Grade 6): solo drumming – Vin Underwood (Grade 4 senior snare), William Chard (Grade 4 tenor) and Russell Davis (Grade 3 bass); Grade 5 pipe bands – Rosie O’Grady’s Highlanders (first place), City of St. Augustine Pipe Band (second place) and The Citadel Pipes and Drums (third place); and, Grade 4 pipe bands – Rosie O’Grady’s Highlanders (first place), Charleston Pipes and Drums (second place) and City of Greenville Pipes and Drums (third place).
