MIDDLEBURG – The Clay County Women’s Auxiliary is working to put together its 18th annual Empty Bowls Luncheon, including finalizing sponsors for the program that brings attention and goods to the food pantry at Orange Park United Methodist Church.
This year’s program will be on April 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Family Life Center at 2042 Reed St.
“This is the first time since the pandemic we’ve been able to do this,” said Salvation Army Capt. Julie Chamberlain. “We had to shut it down for two years, so it’s really nice to see it return.”
Empty Bowls was created to help the community understand the nutritional needs of some residents. For $20, guests can select a bowl and then sit down among the other guests, eat their soup, and learn a little about how their donation helped fill the empty bowls of people less fortunate in their community. Afterward, the bowls are theirs to keep.
Each meal consists of a bowl of soup, a glass of water and slices of bread. The meal is symbolic of the lack of substant food options for many.
“All of the proceeds stay in Clay County,” Chamberlain said. “The money goes toward supporting our feeding programs.”
Students from St. Johns Country Day School, Oakleaf, Orange Park and Ridgeview highs and Wilkinson Junior High crafted some bowls that will sold at the event.
According to the Salvation Army, the program creates and strengthens the community, supports local schools, celebrates delicious food and beautiful pottery and educates people about hunger and poverty.
There will also be a silent auction and bake sale. All proceeds from this year’s Empty Bowls Event will be used to keep The Salvation Army of Clay County’s food pantry stocked with nutritious food and hygiene products.
The Salvation Army needs your support to help us end hunger in Clay County. Title sponsorship costs $2,000, while Soup Tureen sponsorship costs 1,000. A Soup Bowl sponsorship costs $500 and a Soup Ladle sponsorship is $250.
