Runaway car turns True Life Church into drive-thru
FLEMING ISLAND – The last thing Pastor Billy Register expected to find in a classroom at True Life Church was a minivan.
According to two arrest reports, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said William Charles Davis, 32, of Jacksonville, first threatened a clerk with a knife at the Fresh Spot in the Silos Shopping Center on County Road 200 before crashing his minivan through the church’s back wall.
After the clerk said Davis threatened him, he said Davis left at “a high rate of speed. When the defendant turned west onto County Road 220, he lost control of the van and crashed into the building.
“How he got on that trajectory to hit the building, I just don’t know,” Register said. ‘We call that room the Praise and Worship room.’ We also use it as a classroom.
“There are a lot of places he could have hit the building that would have been more inconvenient, so it could have been worse.”
Deputies caught Davis and found a knife on the northeast side of the building.
Davis was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
His bond was set at $22,507.
