ORANGE PARK - After a 1-0, nine inning loss to region semifinalist West Nassau, Ridgeview High's softball team looked back on track with five straight wins including a fifth inning turnaround 5-2 win over Paxon High on Wed., March 4 fueled by a two run homer by Alyssa Adams.
The Lady Panthers have wins over Baker County, First Coast, Nease, Fletcher and, on Wednesday, a thriller against Paxon who took the Panthers to a 2-1 gap into the fifth inning after a seemingly tough pitching duel between the Panthers Brittany Michael and Paxon's Ashley Conney yielded 18 total strikeouts for the game; 11 for Michael, eight for Conner.
In the second inning, Paxon struck first with a walk, a double and a grounder loading the bases with a single to left field putting two runs in.
An error on a grounder from Ridgeview hitter Jaden Marsh was sandwiched by two strikeouts to squelch a retaliatory inning for the Panthers.
In the fourth, Ridgeview finally got runs with Alyssa Adams rocking a single to right field with Sarah Anderson fielder's choice getting Adams to second and putting the fleet-footed Anderson on base. A series of pickoff attempt throwing errors got Adams home for a 2-1 score.
Conner whiffed Gabby Michel and Milani Sablan to end the inning.
In the fifth, a walk to Brooke Michael preempted Adams' winning homer over the centerfield wall that was the gamebreaker.
The Panthers piled on in the sixth as Conner seemed unable to get the zone at home plate with two grounders yielding two outs, but a walk and triple by Sablan adding two runs and an error on a Marsh grounder scoring the game 5-2.
Michael slammed the door with three strikeouts to end the game.
Ridgeview's schedule gets no break with Ponter Vedra on Fri., March 6, at Oakleaf Tues., March 10 and at Clay Thurs., March 12.
