ORANGE PARK – Hoodie-Hoo!

That’s what staff and residents of Signature Healthcare shouted over and over while waving their hands in the air last Thursday.

There are two questions to go along with that cry: what is Hoodie-Hoo and why were they yelling it?

Most people aren’t aware Feb. 20 is Northern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day.

And what exactly does that mean?

Hoodie-Hoo Day is celebrated to help people to overcome the winter blahs and welcome springtime.

Thomas Roy, creator of more than 80 holidays, created and copyrighted Hoodie-Hoo day during the 1980s. Those who know of it celebrate and participate in hopes of calling for an early spring.

Barbara Nicholls, Activities Director at Signature Health Care, is a believer in Hoodie-Hoo Day.

“I love our residents here and want them to have as much fun daily as possible,” she said.

Nicholls gathered many of her residents and some of the staff outside to participate in the “ceremony.”

At exactly noon, the group pushed their hands into the air, shook them vigorously and sounded off with “Hoodie-Hoo!” multiple times.

Whether or not Hoodie-Hoo day was successful in shaking off the winter blues and bringing spring along more quickly is left to be seen.
