Man convicted of shooting his girlfriend’s father on 2021
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Clay County jury convicted an Oakleaf man on Aug. 4 for attempted manslaughter and using a gun to shoot the father of his girlfriend while the victim was holding his 1-year-old grandchild.
Brandon-Javier Terell Long, 26, will remain in the Clay County Jail until he is sentenced by Judge Don, H. Lester on Aug. 30.
According to the arrest report, Long’s girlfriend and her father came to a house that she and Long used to share to gather some of her belongings on Sept. 28, 2021. When the father picked up their child, Long tried to wrestle his child away. Both men and the child fell on the couch during the scuffle, and the woman’s father was able to grab the child and attempted to leave through a back door. As the father and his grandchild entered a breezeway, Long fired two rounds at him with a 9 mm handgun. One of the bullets hit the father in the forearm while he was holding the child.
The jury was given the option of attempted murder, but they decided on the lesser offense.

Woman fought with deputies, fire rescue after wrecking at Chick-fil-A
FLEMING ISLAND – A woman who crashed her car in the drive-thru lane at a Chick-fil-A on Aug. 3 was arrested after she fought with Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a chief with Fire Rescue when they tried to make sure she was all right.
Lindsay Harwell Turner, 36, of Fleming Island, was charged with three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and firefighter after she hopped a curb in the drive-thru line and struck a tree. When the chief approached the car, he noticed she appeared to be snorting aerosol from a spray can. One of the deputies also saw her sniffing the aerosol.
She became “verbally and physically combative,” according to the arrest report. She slammed her car door on the hand of the fire rescue chief, and she stomped on the foot of one of the deputies. Once inside the squad car, she tried to spit on the deputy through the mesh cage separating the front and back seats.
Turner’s bond was set at $20,011.

Neighbor goes to jail after man said he entered his home while he slept
MIDDLEBURG – A 39-year-old man was arrested on Aug. 6 after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said he walked into a neighbor’s house and accused him of stealing guns from him two months ago.
Christopher Joseph Hedden, of Middleburg, was charged with the aggravated battery during a burglary after the victim said he was awakened by Hedden, who entered the house uninvited. When the victim confronted Hedden in the kitchen, Hedden had a silver handgun in his right hand, according to the arrest report.
The victim’s roommate heard the argument and he fired a shotgun round into the ground to chase Hedden away.
Hedden denied having a handgun and surveillance at Hedden’s house didn’t show him with a gun, CCSO said.
Hedden’s bond was set at $2,503.
