Middleburg man accused to running chop shop at girlfriend’s house
ORANGE PARK – A local man was charged with running a chop shop after Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies found several stolen cars and motorcycles at his home at 450 Hayton Ave. in Orange Park, including four parked in his front driveway.
Wade T. Phillips, 46, was charged with aiding or owning a chop shop. His bond was set at $250,003.
Among the items recovered were two motorcycles which were reported stolen in Duval County, a motorcycle stolen in Los Angeles and a motorcycle taken in Clay County. Neighbors said it was common for Phillips to be working on the bikes well into the early morning hours.
Phillips also had an outstanding warrant from South Carolina accusing him of distributing methamphetamine.

Man arrested for trying to stick up Kangaroo store with a knife
KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – A man already awaiting a trail after he was accused of slapping a Clay County Sheriff’s Deputy last year was arrested again on June 10 for trying to rob the Kangaroo Express at 6835 State Road 21, CCSO said.
William Oryan Tanner, 26, now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery after deputies said he used a knife in an attempt to rob the convenience store. Tanner fled the scene but was caught a block away in a house after a resident noticed a piece of plywood covering a broken doorway had been removed. Deputies found a 12-inch knife inside the garage, and when they entered the kitchen it appeared to have been ransacked, according to the arrest report.
Tanner was released on his own recognizance after he was arrested on Aug. 18, 2020 and charged with resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.
According to the arrest report, deputies tried to detain him after he was walking naked in his yard. When a deputy tried to grab him, he slapped the deputy and tried to run away before being tased and taken into custody.
Since he already was awaiting one trial, he now is being held without bond.

Clay man jailed for leaving his girlfriend for dead in St. Johns
ST. AUGUSTINE – A Middleburg man was arrested at his home on June 10 after St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputies said failed to report when his girlfriend fell from his car and died in January.
Slade T. Sullivan, 26, was charged with providing false information to law enforcement of a missing person and failing to report a death to the medical examiner’s office. St. Johns detectives said he intentionally left the woman on the side of the road and didn’t call 911 to report the incident.
He finally told CCOS deputies about his girlfriend after was arrested less than 12 hours later Jan. 31 in Clay County for attempting to flee law enforcement with lights and siren active and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Sullivan was released after posting a $15,000 bond.

Man charged with armed
robbery of recycling center
ORANGE PARK – A Jacksonville man was arrested following a lengthy investigation into a Feb. 13 break-in at S&S Salvage.
Larry Donneail Brown III, 27, was charged with armed robbery after nearly $8,000 in cash, a television and a handgun were stolen from the metal and auto parts recycling center on Industrial Loop Drive.
Brown already was in the Clay County Jail after being arrested on June 8 for grand theft auto, attempting to flee law enforcement with lights and siren active and driving with a suspended license when deputies served the addition warrant for armed robbery.
Brown’s bond was set at $147,511.

Man with .211 BAL busted
with 2 children in truck
MIDDLEBURG – Alert residents flagged down a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy after they saw a man driving recklessly on County Road 220, and that led to the arrest of a man who was so impaired, he was more than two times over the legal.
Gilbert Leroy Niehaus III, 22, of Middleburg, was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level of .15 or greater with two minor passengers, two counts of child neglect, reckless driving, DUI with property damage and driving with an open container of alcohol after Niehaus stopped on Clover Court after running over a mailbox.
Niehaus fell into the grass when he got out of his truck at 7 p.m. on June 12, CCSO said. Niehaus refused a field sobriety test, but the deputy arrested him he appeared to be drunk and after he spotted an open beer in the center console. Niehaus’ girlfriend and two children were passengers.
Once he arrived at the Clay County Jail, Niehaus’ two breath samples were .211 and .214. The maximum level of alcohol in Florida is .08.
His bond was set at $23,762
