OAKLEAF - Oakleaf High girls soccer opened with three wins; Clay 1-0, Paxon 7-0 and Middleburg 2-1, but the Lady Knights fell 2-0 to Nease on November 14 to end their win streak at three.
For the Lady Knights, sophomore Franchesca Rodriquez has been the goal scoring leader with three goals in four games as well as three assists. Freshman Janessa Sanchez has two assists.
Against Clay, a region finalist last season, Oakleaf got a lone goal from freshman Leila Doyle then stayed aggressive on defense with goalkeeper Madalyn Carlyle making seven saves to preserve the win.
Clay, one of the top teams returning with players from last year's region final finish, was lacking on goals scored as coach Stephanie Waugh has had to juggle her lineup to complement Kirra Dodson's scoring prowess. Dodson combined with top scorer Brooke Bunton last year to drive the Blue Devils, but Bunton is following her Elite team career and Waugh is looking to daughter Tatum Waugh to amp her scoring game.
Against Trinity Christian Academy on November 14, the Clay scoring barrage finally came after just two goals in three games with a 10-0 rout with Dodson blasting three goals, Waugh getting one and junior Kate Wilkening adding one. Wilkening had been a defensive backfield player for Waugh, but has been moved into the offensive set.
Clay has a few good games coming up with Middleburg, Bolles, Trinity Christian again, and Orange Park on the slate.
Middleburg, coached by Joy Rosano, showed a nice uptick in efficiency in a 6-0 win over Suwannee after back to back 2-1 losses to Menendez and Oakleaf.
Rosano got solo goals from six players; Bella Munoz, Olivia Rigazzi, Ruby Owen, Riley Toomey, Aliya Saucer and Camden Rahn as the Bronco attack played as a maroon wave in front of the Suwannee goal.
Owen, a basketball player last year, has shown some great foot skills as has sophomore Maysie Bader as Rosano's two drivers for the offense once the ball crosses midfield.
Orange Park, 3-1, and a region semifinalist last year, just signed forward Rynne Robinson to play at Florida Gulf Coast University and the Raiders may be finding their scoring prowess from last year with wins of 7-0, 8-0 and 1-0 last week.
Fleming Island coach Taylor Berry has put her Golden Eagles up against a tough schedule and sits at 2-2 with strong games, but losses to PK Yonge (1-0) and region finalist last year Stanton (2-1) with wins of 6-0 against Mandarin and 3-1 against Tocoi Creek.
The Golden Eagles, with Rylie Gardner and Sophia Pontieri leading the attack, have unbeaten and 7A defending champion Creekside and 2A Final Four finisher St. Johns Country Day School coming to town with road trips to region finalist Nease and region semifinalist Bishop Kenny to toughen up the roster.
For Keystone Heights High, coach Roger Laurent has a young, inexperience crew that has played gallantly to a 3-2 season record with losses to Columbia and district nemesis PK Yonge with sophomore Kayden Huntley leading the attack with eight goals in four games. Laurent has three players with three goals apiece; sophomore Taylor Buchanan, sophomore Kaylee Park and junior Halea Lam with just three seniors on his squad. Goalkeeper Aspen Krohn has an astounding 28 saves.
